Didi Coertze (18) was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive bone cancer and had to have her foot amputated. The cancer has spread to her lungs, but hasn’t broken her spirit. It is with sadness that I have to say Didi didnt make it on the 14th of April 2012 she took her last breath. She was a inspiration to all on how to celebrate life and will be greatly missed.

Dit was met trane in my oe toe ek net voor ses langs die pad voor Worcester by jou gestop het.

    Hi Joppie,

I am Alexia’s mom (one of your cancer friends) and I can’t begin to explain to you how emotional we (Glen & I) were when we saw you off in Oudtshoorn. I don’t think there was a dry eye in sight. You are an inspiration to all of us.

I hope and pray that your journey will be rewarding to you as well.

We have not yet found a donor but that has not dampened our spirits. She is doing well at the moment and is a bundle of joy and energy.

Thank you for what you are doing. This world could really do with more people like you!

God bless you and your family.

    Warm regards,

    Glen, Jacqui & Alexia

    Middag Joppi,
my man is gediagniseer januarie 2009 met ewing sarcoma, ons het als deur gemaak, chemo en bestraaling, en hys nou september die 14d oorlede, ouderdom van 32, was die hartseerste en moeilikste tyd in my lewe. huwelik van 12 jaar en 2 klein kindertjies en dis vir my so onregverdig… hy was die beste man en pappa ooit, daart niks vir sy hande terug gestaan nie, hyt ons so bederf, hy was so harde werker. ons was reg van desember af 2010 hy gaan sterf maar rerig dit wat ons die laaste 2 weke deur gegaan het was onmenslik, dit was so wreed, ek kan dit nie beskryf nie, als wat hy gese het moenie met hom gebeur nie, het gebeur. hyt soos n kind van 5 opgetree, beroerte gehad, baie moeilik gepraat, kon nie meer loop nie – parapleeg, sy laaste 5 dae was hy in ‘n koma en sy organe het in gegee en hyt eintlik versmoor van die water wat op stoot in sy longe. ek kon als hanteer selfs die wete hy gaan dood gaan maar die manier wat hy oorlede is, is vir my verskriklik. sy laaste woorde aan my was op die 9de september..ekt hom gevra wie is ek en hy het gese michelle, ek was so bly hy weet wie ek is en toe se hy… Jys my vrou en ek jou man, dis ‘n memory wat veraltyd diep in my hart sal wees.

Keagan my son, now aged nearly 26, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in Jan 2009. The past years have been like a roller coaster ride with him having three major surgeries (hip, lower spine and arm), two years of chemo, radiotherapy to the hip and currently to the arm. Blood tests, bone marrow biopsies and lots more. It has been a journey through fire and yet there have been some amazing blessings – like the wonderful people we have come to know, like you Joppie who inspires, encourages and practically assists people like us! We wish you continued energy in your efforts to support those faced with a most relentless disease Joppie. Our message is one of hope though. To those faced with this struggle and those supporting them, to do everything possible to support your immune system with excellent nutrition and maintain a positive, optimistic attitude, reading inspirational writing, maintaining a sense of humour and faith in a Higher Power. A strong support group for those affected is vital. After a third occurence of ES in his left humerus early this year – limb salvage surgery was performed in CT and Keagan now has a prosthetic humerus. He is currently undergoing rt in Durban and has started rehab for his arm to regain use and strength. Best and most amazing news is that on Wed 20 March 2013 he was lucky enough to have a full head to toe PET Scan which looks at all soft tissue and bone, and the radiologist report was that there was no abnormal uptake – a clear scan result ! Who would have believed it! Never give up hope – do whatever you need to and whatever you can. It is a hard, sometimes cruel but often amazing journey with unexpected blessings. Light and strength to anyone on this road !
